Campervan rental in Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the starting point of Iceland's Ring Road, one of the most spectacular road trips in the world. Van-Comparator compares the campervans and 4x4 campers published by the major platforms, live.

The campervan — VW California, Mercedes Marco Polo, Ford Transit Nugget — is the ultimate freedom format in Reykjavik: it drives like a large car, parks in town, yet hides a bed, a kitchenette and often a pop-top roof. It is the most contested segment of the market, split between private owners and professional fleets — the one where comparing platforms pays most.

Expect €75–150 per day depending on season, model and included mileage. All these vans stay under 3.5 t: a standard car licence is enough across Europe (in the US and Canada, your regular licence works — an International Driving Permit is recommended for European visitors). Check each offer's deposit, excess and mileage cap — the three items that vary most between platforms.

By campervan out of Reykjavik: routes and stopovers

From Reykjavik, the Golden Circle — Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss — is about three hours of driving, though it deserves a full day. The south coast then lines up the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls all the way to the village of Vík and its black-sand beach, two and a half hours out. Northwards, the Snæfellsnes peninsula — “Iceland in miniature” — is a two-hour drive, and the Reykjanes peninsula, with its fresh lava fields and the Blue Lagoon, starts at the airport's doorstep.

Since 2015, sleeping in a vehicle outside campsites has been illegal in Iceland without the landowner's permission: happily, the country has campsites everywhere, most of them first-come, first-served. The F-roads of the interior are forbidden to two-wheel-drive campers — your insurance is void the moment you turn onto one. The golden tip, even in summer: check vedur.is and road.is every morning, and hold on to your doors in gusts — wind damage to doors is excluded from most rental insurance policies.

When to go from Reykjavik

Reykjavik (Région capitale, Islande) — Wild camping is forbidden for vehicles: overnight in campsites only. A very short season (June–August), changeable weather year-round, and Highland F-roads restricted to 4x4s explicitly allowed by the rental company.
