Motorhome routes out of Reykjavik
The great classic out of Reykjavik is the Ring Road, route 1, which loops the island in roughly 1,300 km — allow a week at the very least. Shorter, the Golden Circle links Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss in a loop of about three hours of driving, while route 1 south strings waterfalls and black beaches together all the way to Vík.
Where to go by motorhome around Reykjavik
Þingvellir, where the tectonic plates meet, is forty-five minutes away, as are the lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula and the Blue Lagoon. The Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls take around two hours to reach, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula — all of Iceland condensed beneath its glacier-capped volcano — likewise about two hours.
When to go from Reykjavik
Reykjavik (Région capitale, Islande) — Wild camping is forbidden for vehicles: overnight in campsites only. A very short season (June–August), changeable weather year-round, and Highland F-roads restricted to 4x4s explicitly allowed by the rental company.
