Bergen is base camp for the western fjords: the E16 reaches Voss then Flåm and the Nærøyfjord in around two and a half hours, the Hardanger national tourist route hugs the Hardangerfjord and its orchards, and the RV7 climbs to the Vøringsfossen waterfall and the Hardangervidda. Norheimsund and the shores of the Hardangerfjord are ninety minutes away; Voss, Norway’s outdoor-sports capital, barely more. Allow two and a half to three hours for Flåm, the Flåmsbana mountain railway and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, or for Rosendal and its baroque manor beneath the glaciers of the Folgefonna.
