Roadsurfer vs Indie Campers: which platform should you choose?

Roadsurfer or Indie Campers for your campervan hire? Fleets, prices, mileage, one-way options and station networks in Europe and the US, compared honestly.

Roadsurfer and Indie Campers are Europe’s two big professional campervan and motorhome rental companies, both also present in the United States. Own fleets, online booking, recent vehicles: on paper they look alike. In the details, they serve different trips.

Roadsurfer: the uniform fleet and unlimited mileage

Germany’s Roadsurfer runs dozens of stations across Europe and a handful in the US, with a standardised fleet: VW California, Ford Nugget, recent panel vans and semi-integrateds, generally under three years old. Strengths: unlimited mileage included on most European rentals, pets allowed on part of the fleet, clearly priced camping add-ons. Expect €79-189/day depending on model and season. Limits: fewer pick-up cities than Indie Campers, and one-way is possible but restricted to certain station pairs. Our full Roadsurfer review covers the experience in depth.

Indie Campers: the network and one-way flexibility

Portugal’s Indie Campers claims Europe’s largest network (70+ cities from Portugal to Scandinavia) and a wide range, from mini-campers to A-class motorhomes, topped up by a marketplace of private and third-party vehicles. Strengths: one-way rentals between a huge number of cities (fees vary by route), aggressive off-season promotions and bargain relocation deals. Limits: mileage is capped on many offers (a daily allowance with extra kilometres billed), and quality is more variable on the marketplace side. Read our Indie Campers review for specifics.

Don’t choose blind
