VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Campervan, converted van, semi-integrated or A-class: which RV for which trip?
Nomad couple, family, long stay: the real criteria for choosing between campervan, converted van, semi-integrated, alcove and A-class — plus the automatic gearbox question.
This is the structuring choice of your road trip — and it changes everything: the budget, the driving, and what you'll actually see of the country. Six vehicle families share the rental market, each implying a different way of traveling — here's how to match them to your trip, with real price ranges.
The campervan: freedom (and compactness)
Under 2 meters tall on some models, 5 meters long: a campervan parks in town, threads along small roads and sleeps discreetly where a big motorhome wouldn't dare. The trade-off: you live outdoors, showers are rare, and the space works for two, not four. It's the king of couples and coastal itineraries — budget €75–150 per day.
Converted van and semi-integrated: the sensible middle
The converted van (€85–160/day) adds standing height, a real bathroom and a footprint that's still manageable. The semi-integrated RV (€95–180/day) delivers full comfort — permanent bed, kitchen, big garage — for a couple or small family stringing stages together.
Alcove and A-class: families and the long haul
The alcove motorhome with its 6 berths (€90–170/day) remains the best deal for larger families. The A-class (€130–280/day) is the choice for long stays and winter: insulation, volume, panoramic views. On board, you're home — it's a different kind of trip.
The budget question, honestly
Over a week with 4 people, the gap between a converted van and an A-class works out to roughly €10–15 per person per day. Weighed against what the A-class delivers in bad weather, that's rational for a month in Scandinavia — and overkill for a summer week in Portugal.
Automatic or manual?
For a first rental, in the mountains, or in the United States (where automatic is the norm), an automatic gearbox removes real mental load. Van-Comparator's vehicle-type selector and each listing's details let you filter — and our first-time driving guide completes the picture.
