The American West by RV: the perfect road trip playground

Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon: why the Grand Circle is considered the world's best RV itinerary — and how to plan it.

There's a reason the whole world comes to the American West for its first RV trip: a dozen legendary national parks packed onto a 1,300-mile "Grand Circle", wide straight roads, organized campgrounds everywhere. You learn here, you feast here, you come back.

The must-sees

Starting from Las Vegas: Zion and its sandstone canyons, Bryce Canyon and its amphitheater of hoodoos, Page (Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend), Monument Valley at sunrise, and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to close the loop. Allow 12 to 14 days for the full circle; with one week, stick to the Zion–Bryce–Grand Canyon trio. Mountain variant: start from Denver via Moab (Arches, Canyonlands). Distances are honest here: rarely more than three hours between two parks, on roads built for big vehicles.

When to go

April–June and September–October are ideal: bearable heat, gorgeous light. Summer is scorching in the canyons (113 °F in Page) and the parks are packed; winter closes Bryce's high roads. Altitude matters too — Bryce sits at 8,000 ft and freezes at night as early as October.

Budget and vehicles

This is Class C country (25 to 32 ft): $150–350 per day depending on the season, with mileage sold in packages ("mileage packages" — on this loop, buy generously: $0.35 per extra mile stings). Add the kitchen and bedding kits (often $100–150 per booking), gas (a healthy appetite: 8–12 mpg) and park entry — the America the Beautiful pass ($80) pays for itself from the third park.

The critical point: campgrounds

Campgrounds inside the parks book out months ahead on the federal reservation platforms — that's THE constraint of this trip. Plan B works fine: private campgrounds at the park gates, and free nights on BLM public land where allowed. Book the vehicle as early as the campgrounds: summer fleets sell out early in the year, and comparing platforms on Van-Comparator pays off handsomely on these long rentals.
