Tenerife and Madeira by camper: eternal spring on two islands

Renting a van in Tenerife or Madeira: 22 °C in January, volcanoes and primeval forests, island camping rules and the right vehicle size for mountain roads.

When the continent parks its vans for the winter, two Atlantic islands take over: Tenerife and Madeira, 20-24 °C all year round, four flight hours from the European capitals. Two very different moods — and island rules worth knowing.

Tenerife: the volcano above the clouds

The island works in storeys: coasts at 23 °C, the misty laurel forests of Anaga, and Mount Teide at 3,715 m — Spain's highest road crosses a lunar landscape above the clouds. In a van you go from beach to mineral world in 90 minutes. Worth knowing: free camping is banned and the public camping zones in the natural spaces require a free online permit, requested several days ahead. Private campsites and aires complete the network. Rental in Tenerife: compact van 70-110 € per day, with strong demand from December to February — the winter long-stayers book months ahead.

Madeira: the mountain in the Atlantic

From Funchal, Madeira offers the levadas (irrigation channels turned walking trails), the primeval forest of Fanal and vertiginous viewpoints. Two realities assert themselves: the roads are steep — among Europe's steepest, with tunnels and 20% ramps — and the van rental offer is thinner than in the Canaries. The right pick: a mini-camper or short van, recent engine, automatic gearbox welcome. Overnight parking follows strict local rules: campsites and designated areas first.

When to go, what to budget

All year — that is the killer argument. Winter is high season on both islands; May-June and October offer the best prices. One-week budget for two: 800-1,300 € all in, flights excluded. Distances are short (80 km end to end), so fuel barely registers — this is van travel at its best wonder-per-kilometre ratio.

Van-Comparator compares the operators present on both islands, including Indie Campers and local Yescapa owners. One search, the real total price — and eternal spring at the end of it.
