VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Renting a campervan in Geneva: around Lake Geneva and into the Valais
From Geneva: Lavaux, the Rhône valley and the Valais passes by campervan. Vignette, Swiss prices, stopovers and a 5-day itinerary.
Geneva is an ideal gateway for an alpine road trip: Lake Geneva starts at the city limits, the Lavaux vineyards are an hour away, and the Valais with its 4,000 m peaks lies just beyond. The airport connects all of Europe, making it a practical pickup point for a rental van.
Days 1–2: the Swiss shore of the lake
Coppet, Nyon, Lausanne, then the Lavaux terraces, a UNESCO-listed vineyard hanging above the water — dedicated parking in Cully and Rivaz, weekend tastings in the cellars. Stage in Vevey or Montreux before Chillon Castle, set on its rock at the water's edge.
Days 3–5: the Valais
Head up the Rhône valley: Martigny, Sion with its two fortified hills, Sierre. From there, three options by season: the Val d'Anniviers (Grimentz and its sun-blackened chalets), Zermatt — car-free: van in the Täsch car park, rail shuttle in 12 minutes — or the climb to the Great St Bernard Pass (2,469 m, open June–October) towards Italy.
What to know on the Swiss side
- Motorway vignette required: CHF 40 (≤ 3.5 t), often already fitted on vans rented in Switzerland — check.
- Wild camping: regulated canton by canton and broadly restrictive; happily the Valais has dozens of superb high-altitude campsites (CHF 30–50 a night for two).
- Everything costs more: fuel, groceries, campsites. Budget 20–30% above a comparable French road trip — our fuel and tolls budget guide helps you put numbers on it.
Renting in Geneva
Expect €95–160/day for a campervan in summer. Border tip: departures on the French side (Annecy, Lyon) are often 15–25% cheaper for an identical itinerary. Van-Comparator compares Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers on both sides of the border in one search. Count five days minimum; a full week lets you add the Aletsch glacier area or loop home along the French shore of the lake.
