Campervan Hire in Freiburg: The Southern Gateway to the Black Forest
Titisee, Feldberg, Kaiserstuhl and the Schwarzwaldhochstraße: why Freiburg im Breisgau is the best campervan base for the Black Forest, what rental costs, and three itineraries between Germany, Alsace and Switzerland.
A useful clarification first: this is Freiburg im Breisgau, the Baden city at the foot of the Black Forest — not its Swiss cousin. Reputedly Germany’s sunniest city, compact and bike-friendly, it is the best campervan base for the massif: the Feldberg is 40 minutes away, the Kaiserstuhl vineyards 30, Colmar and Alsace under an hour, Basel and its airport 70 km.
Renting on the spot
Freiburg’s offer mixes private owners (Yescapa and Goboony are very active in Baden-Württemberg) and professional stations in the area and around Basel-Mulhouse. Coming from France, comparing with Mulhouse or Strasbourg can save tens of euros a day — a Van-Comparator search shows all three at once. Three itineraries from Freiburg
- The high Black Forest (2-3 days): up the Schauinsland (cable car from the valley), the Titisee and Schluchsee lakes, the Feldberg summit at 1,493 m — the heart of the massif, detailed in our Black Forest campervan guide.
- Kaiserstuhl and Breisgau (1-2 days): the little volcanic massif covered in terraced vines, its wine villages (Vogtsburg, Endingen) and cellars — the best gourmet stop around, 30 minutes from town.
- The grand traverse (4-5 days): up the massif along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B500) to Baden-Baden, back via the Alsace wine route — two countries, two wine cultures, one tank of fuel.
Nature that carries the local economy
Since 2014 the massif has hosted the Black Forest National Park, in its northern part, plus a dense network of nature parks. The stakes go beyond the postcard: the reference study by Mayer, Müller, Woltering, Arnegger and Job in Landscape and Urban Planning quantified the economic impact of tourism in six German national parks and showed that visitors inject tens of millions of euros per year into the local economies (Google Scholar page). For the campervan traveller this is very tangible: well-marked trails, well-kept Stellplätze and tourist offices that actually know motorhomers.
Practical tips

In summer the lakeside Stellplätze (Titisee first) fill early: arrive before 4pm or aim for the lesser-known villages of the Hochschwarzwald.
