For exploring Croatia by campervan, Zagreb is often a better starting point than the coast: rental prices are gentler, supply is wider, and the A1 motorway puts Plitvice at 2 h and Split at 3.5 h. The Croatian capital deserves more than a quick pick-up anyway, with its Austro-Hungarian upper town and the Dolac market.

7-day itinerary from Zagreb
- Day 1: Zagreb, overnight at Camp Zagreb on Lake Rakitje.
- Day 2: the Zagorje — Trakošćan castle and baroque Varaždin.
- Days 3-4: Plitvice Lakes, two campsite nights near the park.
- Day 5: the Rastoke waterfalls, then down to Zadar.

Croatian rules to know
Wild camping is forbidden everywhere and coastal checks are frequent: sleep in campsites or official stopovers. Croatia has been in the Schengen area and the eurozone since 2023 — no formalities coming from France, Austria or Slovenia, but if you plan to dip into neighbouring Bosnia, check that your contract allows it and that the green card covers the country.
