Campervan Hire in Copenhagen: Møns Klint and the Danish Coast
The Møn cliffs, Stevns Klint, Odsherred and the Marguerite Route: the campervan escape from Copenhagen, with Danish overnight parking rules and budget.
Denmark is the gentle version of the Nordic road trip: short distances, flat and safe roads, immaculate villages and luminous coastlines. From Copenhagen, a 4-6 day loop around Zealand and Møn is enough to understand why the Danes are northern Europe's keenest campers.
The itinerary: white cliffs and the Marguerite Route
Head south to Stevns Klint (1 h 15 from Copenhagen), a UNESCO-listed chalk cliff, then cross to the island of Møn via the Kalvehave bridge: Møns Klint raises 128 m of white chalk above turquoise water — the country's most spectacular natural site, with balcony trails and one of northern Europe's rare certified dark-sky areas. Loop back through Præstø and the manor country of southern Zealand, then west to Odsherred and its glacial hills. Whenever you can, follow the "Marguerite Route", the daisy-signposted scenic itinerary that strings together the country's prettiest back roads. Total loop: 450 to 550 km.
Overnight parking: Denmark is not Sweden
No right to roam here: wild camping is forbidden in Denmark, and sleeping in a van outside authorised pitches exposes you to a fine. The country compensates with an excellent network: plentiful campsites (200-350 DKK, €27-47 a night), dedicated stopovers in most towns, and "nature camps" reserved for tents. Scout your stops the evening before — the per-country details are in our wild camping in Europe guide, and the stopover system in our stopovers guide.
Budget and season
In Copenhagen, campervans rent for €85 to €160 per day in summer, mini-campers for €55 to €95 — Scandinavian rates, roughly 20% above France, softened by the short distances: 500 km over the loop, i.e. €70-90 of diesel. Five days for two: €750 to €1,100 all included. The season runs May to September; June offers the best light-to-crowds ratio, and Danish traffic melts away after 10 August.
Our tips
- The bicycle is king: take the bike rack option, every town has its cycle paths.
- Pay by card everywhere, including automated campsites — cash has all but disappeared.
- Mind the Øresund bridge if you push on into Sweden: around €60-75 per crossing for a campervan, bookable online.
