The Dalmatian Coast by Campervan: Zadar to Dubrovnik

Drive the Dalmatian coast in a campervan: a 7-day Zadar-Split-Dubrovnik itinerary, the Pelješac bridge, coastal campsites, budget and pitfalls to avoid.

Driving down the Dalmatian coast in a campervan means 350 km of panoramic road between the Adriatic and the mountains, with a UNESCO-listed stop almost every day. The Magistrale (D8) snakes above the coves; the A1 motorway, set back inland, eats up the kilometres when needed. Here is the benchmark itinerary, north to south.

The border question: Neum and the Pelješac bridge

Since 2022, the Pelješac bridge lets you reach Dubrovnik without crossing the Bosnian corridor at Neum. That is a real advantage in a rented van: Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the European Union, and many contracts require a green card insurance extension to enter — when they do not forbid it outright. Check the clause before signing — our guide to deposits and insurance explains what to look for.

A realistic budget

Campervan: 85-160 € per day depending on season. Coastal campsites: 35-60 € per night in summer — Camping Šimuni, Stobreč Split and Mlini are reliable picks. Fuel for 500-600 km with detours: about 90 €. A1 tolls: 25-35 € if you use it extensively. Weekly total for two: 1,400-1,900 €. In September everything drops by 25-35% and the water is still perfect — see renting off season.

Pitfalls to avoid

No nights outside campsites: Croatia punishes wild camping hard, especially on the coast. Book July-August campsites weeks ahead. And plan short legs: the Magistrale averages 60 km/h. To pick your vehicle, compare offers from Split or Zagreb.
