Your First Family Road Trip in a Small Campervan: the Guide

Picking the right size, keeping stages short, mixing campsites and stopovers, keeping kids busy: the playbook for a successful first family campervan trip.

First trip in a camper with children? Good news: it is one of the easiest holiday formats to get right, provided you size the project correctly. Here is the guide to a first experience that makes everyone want to do it again.

The right vehicle: compact but sufficient

With one or two young children, a mini-camper with a rooftop tent (4 berths, €45-90 per day) can handle a long weekend. For a week or more, move up to a pop-top campervan (€75-150 per day): kids sleep upstairs, parents below, and you can cook under cover. Check the decisive criterion: as many belted seats with Isofix mounts as passengers. Our guide which RV for which trip helps you decide.

Short stages, slow rhythm

The golden rule with children: 150 km of driving per day maximum, and every other day without driving at all. A successful first trip is three places in a week, not seven. Plan to reach your stop before 5 pm: setting up beds, cooking dinner and settling children in an unfamiliar place takes time the first few evenings.

Campsites first, stopovers second

For a first trip, book campsites with sanitary blocks and a playground every other night (€15-35 per night in Europe): easy showers, busy kids, laundry done. In between, a motorhome stopover or a night at a farm through hospitality networks adds the flavour of adventure without the logistics.

The handover, as a family

Run the departure checklist in pairs: while one parent follows the owner's explanations (water, gas, electrics, beds), the other fits the child seats and stows the luggage. Film every manipulation with your phone — by the third evening, nobody remembers how the table folds out.

The realistic budget

For a week in a compact campervan: €500 to €900 of rental depending on the season, €120 to €200 of fuel for 1,000 km, €100 to €200 of campsites.
