Your First Motorhome Rental: the 7 Classic Mistakes

Booking too late, going too big, ignoring included mileage, rushing the condition report: the 7 typical first-rental mistakes — and how to avoid them.

A successful first motorhome rental depends less on the vehicle than on a handful of decisions taken before departure. Here are the seven mistakes most beginners make — all avoidable.

1. Booking too late

For July-August, family vehicles and affordable campervans go from spring onwards. Booking in June for August means choosing from the leftovers, at full price. Book 4 to 6 months ahead for high season.

2. Going too big

The beginner's reflex: take the largest vehicle "to be comfortable". The result: stress at the wheel, impassable villages, impossible parking. For 2, a 5.4-6 m campervan is plenty; for 4, a 7 m semi-integrated. Our guide driving a motorhome for the first time tells you what to expect at the wheel.

3. Ignoring included mileage

A tempting offer with 100 km per day included and €0.25/km beyond becomes a trap on a 2,000 km road trip: a €250 surcharge at drop-off. Estimate your loop, then compare offers on the total price.

4. Rushing the handover and condition report

Ten minutes flat at the depot, no photos, and on return: a dispute over a pre-existing scratch. Insist on 30 to 60 minutes of explanations, film the manipulations, photograph everything — our departure checklist exists precisely for this.

5. Underestimating the excess

A deposit of €1,500 to €2,500, an excess often to match: one clipped mirror can cost dearly. Partial excess reduction (€10-25 per day) should be decided with full knowledge — read our deposit and insurance guide beforehand, not at the counter.

6. Planning like a car trip

300 km in a motorhome is not 3 hours but more like 4 to 5, breaks included. The winning plan: 150 to 200 km per day maximum, arrival before 5 pm, one non-driving day every two or three. The best memories happen parked.

7. Forgetting life on board

Water levels, waste dumping, gas for cooking, leisure battery: the daily logistics take a day or two to learn — if you think about them. Locate the service points along your route before leaving, not when the grey water tank overflows.

One last, transversal tip: compare before booking. Van-Comparator queries Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers in one search and shows the real total price — the eighth classic mistake being to pay 20% more for the same van on another platform.
