Germany’s Baltic Coast by Campervan: Lübeck to Rügen

White-sand beaches, Belle Époque resorts and the chalk cliffs of Rügen: the campervan itinerary along Germany’s Baltic shore, starting from Hamburg.

From Hamburg, an hour’s drive is all it takes to reach the Baltic: white-sand beaches, Belle Époque resorts and chalk cliffs line up into one of northern Europe’s finest campervan itineraries — and one that remains surprisingly little known abroad.

Lübeck, the Hanseatic queen

First unmissable stop: Lübeck, its Holstentor gate, its UNESCO-listed brick-Gothic churches and its legendary marzipan. Stopovers on the edge of town put the old centre within a fifteen-minute cycle ride.

Timmendorfer Strand and the Holstein shore

Between Travemünde and Scharbeutz run the elegant Holstein resorts, recognisable by their Strandkörbe, the hooded wicker beach chairs lined up on the sand. The island of Fehmarn, reached by bridge, adds 78 km of shoreline, family beaches and one of Germany’s sunniest skies.

Rügen, the chalk jewel

Further east you cross the Stralsund bridge — the UNESCO old town deserves an evening in itself — onto Rügen, Germany’s largest island. In Jasmund National Park the white chalk cliffs run all the way to the Königsstuhl (118 m), immortalised by the painter Caspar David Friedrich. Binz and its white villas concentrate the chic seaside-resort atmosphere. With more time, push on to Usedom, the "sun island" on the Polish border, whose imperial-era resorts add another long ribbon of sand.

Planning the trip

Allow 5 to 7 days and about 700 km round trip from Hamburg. In July and August the coastal campsites fill up: book ahead, or shift to June or September — the late-season light on the cliffs is superb and prices drop sharply, as our off-season rental guide details. A mini-camper is plenty for two (€45 to €90 a day); families will prefer a semi-integrated RV (€95 to €180). Wild camping is banned in Germany — country-by-country rules are in our guide to wild camping in Europe. Finally, compare platforms out of Hamburg or Berlin on Van-Comparator before you book.
