Campervan Hire in Helsinki: Summer Lapland and the Lake District

The Lakeland, Oulu, Rovaniemi and the midnight sun: the great campervan itinerary from Helsinki, with distances, Finnish roaming rights and budget.

Finland may be van travel's best-kept secret: immaculate, empty roads, 188,000 lakes, generous overnighting rights and, in summer, a light that never switches off. From Helsinki, the run north to Lapland is a road trip of legend — here is how to build it.

The itinerary: 1,800 km northward

First stage: the Lakeland, around Lahti then Jyväskylä and Kuopio — wooden jetties, lakeside saunas, forests to the horizon. Allow 3 days to cross it without rushing. Then aim for Oulu at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia, and on to Rovaniemi, Lapland's capital, sitting on the Arctic Circle (830 km from Helsinki by the direct road — but you did not come for the direct road). Beyond, the Urho Kekkonen and Pallas-Yllästunturi national parks deliver true tundra: rounded fells, reindeer on the road, total silence. Full loop: 12 to 15 days, 2,500 to 3,000 km.

Jokamiehenoikeus: everyman's right

The Finnish version of allemansrätten — jokamiehenoikeus, literally "everyman's right" — allows a night in open nature away from dwellings, leaving no trace. As in Sweden, it protects camping more than parking: in a campervan, use pitches that are not signed against it, trailhead car parks and the very decent campsite network (€25-38 a night), often equipped with saunas. The country-by-country rules are in our wild camping in Europe guide.

Midnight sun and mosquitoes

From mid-June to mid-July north of the Arctic Circle, the sun never sets: pack a sleep mask and enjoy the endless "evenings". The trade-off is called mosquitoes: July is their peak inland — serious repellent, and check the van's mosquito nets at handover. By late August they vanish and the first northern lights appear.

Budget and rental

In Helsinki, campervans run €90 to €170 per day in summer, mini-campers €55 to €100, family alcoves around €120-190. Fuel sits in the Nordic average (€1.80-1.95/L) and the roads are free — Finland has no tolls. Two weeks for two: €2,200 to €3,200 all included. Book 4 to 5 months ahead for July.
