Hurricanes and extreme weather: RV travel in Florida and the southern US

Hurricane season and RV rental in Florida: the risk calendar, insurance and cancellation traps, campground evacuation rules and the best-value months.

Florida and the southern US are RV paradise — in winter. In summer, the region enters hurricane season, and a motorhome is just about the worst place to be when one approaches. Here is how to plan lucidly without giving up on low-season bargains.

The risk calendar

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking sharply from August to mid-October. That is precisely why Florida RV rentals are 30-40% cheaper in summer: weak local demand, humid heat and weather risk. From November to April, by contrast, it is dry season and peak pricing — snowbird season, when northern retirees drive south for the winter. If your dates are flexible, November and April offer the best weather-to-price ratio.

Before booking: cancellation and insurance

Read the cancellation policy closely: a named hurricane does not automatically entitle you to a refund, and travel insurance usually excludes a storm already named at the time you buy the policy — so insure early. Also check what the vehicle’s insurance covers for weather damage (hail, flooding): some deductibles apply even when the driver is blameless. Our deposit and insurance guide covers the generic traps.
