VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Lake Annecy by campervan: the clearest water in the Alps
The lake loop, Col de la Forclaz, Talloires and the escape routes above the crowds: how to enjoy Annecy in a campervan despite strictly controlled overnight parking.
Turquoise water famed as among the purest in Europe, mountains falling straight into it, an old town laced with canals: Lake Annecy ticks every box. It is also one of the places in France where van travel demands the most finesse — success has a price here, and it is paid in regulations.
The lake loop, in the right direction
Forty kilometres in total from Annecy. West side: Sévrier, Saint-Jorioz and the lakeside cycle path — perfect if you carry bikes. East side: Menthon-Saint-Bernard and its castle, Talloires and its bay, then the climb to the Col de la Forclaz (1,157 m): the balcony view over the lake is sumptuous and paragliders launch right beside you. The road is narrow and busy: go up early, come down before 11 am.
Overnight parking: the rules of the game
Around the lake, overnight motorhome parking is banned or heavily restricted along almost the entire shoreline, with height barriers on the beach car parks. Do not try to be clever: patrols are real. What works: the campsites at the southern end of the lake (Doussard and Lathuile concentrate a dozen), the service stopovers of the neighbouring valleys (Thônes, Faverges), and for evenings in town, an authorised car park on the edge plus ten minutes by bike. Our guide to motorhome stopovers explains how to find them.
The escape route
When the shores saturate, gain altitude: the Semnoz panoramic road, the Glières plateau, or the Thônes valley towards the Aravis. Thirty minutes take you from the crowds to the high pastures.
Budget and season
- Campervan: €85-150/day in Annecy, peaking in July-August; €45-90 for a mini-camper.
- Best period: June and September — swimming still on, half the crowds.
- Combine with: the lake slots perfectly into an Alps motorhome road trip towards the Beaufortain or the Vanoise.
