The Lake District by campervan from Manchester

A campervan road trip in the Lake District from Manchester: 5–7 days between Windermere and Keswick, narrow roads, campsites to book ahead and £70–120 per day.

Ninety minutes up the road from Manchester, the Lake District is England's most beautiful national park: glacial lakes, dramatic passes, grey-stone villages. It is the ideal playground for a first campervan trip — provided you pick the right size of vehicle and book your nights.

The right vehicle: compact, no argument

Park roads are narrow and walled, and some passes — Hardknott with its 30% gradient, Wrynose — are simply off-limits to motorhomes. A van under 6 m is the obvious choice; a mini-camper works brilliantly for two. In Manchester, expect £70–120 per day for a campervan in season (roughly €80–140), noticeably less than London. Our guide which RV for which trip covers the criteria.

The 5–7 day itinerary

Where to sleep: book campsites, no wild overnighting

Overnighting outside campsites is banned in the park and rangers do check. The good news: the campsite network is dense and often gorgeous (National Trust sites at Wasdale and Langdale), at £25–40 a night. In July–August and on bank-holiday weekends, book several weeks ahead. Our guide to motorhome stopovers explains how to plan your nights.

Left-hand driving: two roundabouts and you are set

Left-hand traffic, right-hand drive, speeds in miles. On the park's single tracks, whoever is closest to a passing place reverses — same rule as in Scotland. Give yourself an easy first stage on the M6 before entering the park. Compare available vans in Manchester on Van-Comparator: one search, every platform, the real total price.
