The Loire Valley by motorhome: the perfect first-timer itinerary
Flat roads, short hops, stopovers everywhere and a château every 20 km: why the Loire Valley is the ideal destination for a first motorhome rental.
For a first rental, forget alpine passes and clifftop corniches: what you want is wide flat roads, short stages, welcoming stopovers and a plan B every ten kilometres. In other words: the Loire Valley. It is the gentlest possible classroom for motorhome travel.
Why this is THE learning ground
- Zero driving difficulty: no passes, no hairpins, calm riverside roads.
- Stages of 30 to 60 km: drive an hour, visit, settle in early — the ideal rhythm for taming the vehicle.
- An exceptional stopover network: nearly every Loire-side town has its service area, often €5-12 a night, sometimes free.
The 5-6 day itinerary from Tours
From Tours: Villandry and its gardens, Azay-le-Rideau, Chinon and its vineyard, then back up via Amboise (Leonardo’s Clos Lucé), Chenonceau — the château built across the river, the one absolute must — and finally the excess of Chambord. About 250 km in total: almost nothing, and that is precisely the point. The big châteaux’ car parks accept motorhomes (paid daytime parking, €6-15).
The bicycle, your secret weapon
The Loire à Vélo cycle route shadows the whole itinerary. A bike rack and two bicycles transform the trip: park the vehicle in the morning, pedal between two châteaux, ride home to bed. Most rentals offer the bike rack as an option (€30-60 a week): take it.
A realistic budget
Family semi-integrated €95-160/day in summer, compact campervan €75-120; outside school holidays, knock off 25%. Add fuel (budget 10-12 L/100 km), château tickets (€12-16 per adult at the big names) and campsite or stopover nights — the region is one of the cheapest in France to tour, which is one more argument for a first trip. Before setting off, read driving a motorhome for the first time and the departure checklist: thirty minutes of reading that buy a serene week.
