Mini-Camper: the Best Spots Within 2 Hours of Major Cities
Forests, lakes, passes and coastlines you can reach in a mini-camper from Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Munich or Barcelona: our weekend spot ideas.
The mini-camper's superpower is that it parks like a car: where a 7.5 m A-class hunts for a dedicated area, a VW Caddy California or a converted Dacia Jogger slips onto any parking spot where overnighting is allowed. The result: the best spots are often just one or two hours from the big cities. Here is enough to fill your next few weekends.
From Paris: forests and bays
Fontainebleau remains the absolute classic: bouldering on Saturday, coffee facing the rocks on Sunday morning. More ambitious, the Somme bay (2 h 15 by road) delivers spectacular sunsets and several serviced stopover areas around Saint-Valery. In a mini-camper you park easily in the villages themselves — something no large rig can do.
From Lyon: the Vercors and alpine lakes
The Vercors plateau, 1 h 30 away, lines up quiet passes and high meadows. On the lake side, Annecy and Aiguebelette are under 1 h 30 — aim for car parks set back from the water, where overnighting is tolerated wherever it is not explicitly forbidden. In summer, arrive on Friday evening: by Sunday morning everything is full.
From Bordeaux: ocean and pine forests
The Bordeaux–Lacanau–Cap Ferret triangle suits the mini-camper perfectly: coastal towns often ban overnight motorhome parking right on the shore, but the stopover areas and campsites in the pines, 5-10 minutes from the beaches, stay affordable (€10-20 a night). Our guide to motorhome stopovers explains how these work.
From Munich or Barcelona
Around Munich, the Bavarian lakes (Tegernsee, Walchensee) are under an hour away, backed by a very dense Stellplatz network. From Barcelona, the Costa Brava is best outside July-August: the coves of Cap de Creus, the villages of the Empordà, and campsites open almost year-round.
How much does it cost?
Expect €45 to €90 per day for a mini-camper depending on the season — the lowest rate on the market; our mini-camper rental guide covers the models and their limits. Van-Comparator compares Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers in a single search: over a weekend, the gap between platforms easily reaches €40-60.
