The Limousin is one of vanlife’s best-kept secrets: few crowds, easy roads, deep countryside — and Limoges, the capital of porcelain, right at its centre. The icing on the cake: the A20 motorway through it is toll-free between Vierzon and Brive, a rare luxury for a road-trip budget.
Renting in Limoges
The offer rests mostly on private owners via Yescapa and Goboony, with a few professionals on the outskirts — in a mid-sized city, book early for summer as the fleet fills fast. Prices follow the national ranges: €75 to €150 per day for a campervan (price guide), often at the lower end here.
Millevaches and Vassivière, the great plateau
An hour east, the Millevaches regional nature park rolls out peat bogs, forests and moorland above 700 metres, around Lake Vassivière and its 1,000 hectares — swimming, a sculpture island and wooded shores to park up by. It is one of the least densely populated corners of France, and you feel it: you will pass more Limousin cattle than cars.
One of the darkest skies in France
That low density has a spectacular consequence after dark: very little light pollution. The world atlas of artificial night-sky brightness published by Fabio Falchi and colleagues in 2016 in Science Advances showed that more than a third of humanity — and about 60% of Europeans — can no longer see the Milky Way from home (Google Scholar page). The Millevaches plateau is one of the few pockets of western Europe where it is still visible to the naked eye: one clear night up there beats any planetarium.
Three itineraries from Limoges

Twenty minutes north-west of Limoges, the martyred village of Oradour-sur-Glane, preserved as it stood in 1944, is a place of remembrance that stays with you — allow half a day and the silence it calls for. For overnight stops, the region is generous with simple, often free municipal stopovers — rural France at its most motorhome-friendly.
