Spain’s fifth city, set on the Ebro halfway between Madrid and Barcelona, Zaragoza is one of the smartest starting points on the peninsula: nobody thinks of it, yet all of Aragon radiates around it — from Pyrenean canyons to semi-desert steppe, within two hours in every direction.
Renting in Zaragoza

Ordesa and the Aragonese Pyrenees
Two hours north, Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park — World Heritage listed together with its French twin — carves thousand-metre canyons beneath Europe’s highest limestone summits. Bardenas and Monegros: the deserts next door

South-east, the Monegros steppe delivers American-West scenery, European style. Stops are scarce and the heat is serious: campsite choice counts double here. That is exactly what the study by Josip Mikulić and colleagues published in 2017 in Tourism Management quantifies: among all campsite attributes, location and peace and quiet weigh decisively both in the choice and in the experience itself (Google Scholar page).

Zaragoza works ideally as a triangle: Rioja and its bodegas to the west (our Rioja wine route), Pyrenees to the north, return through the Bardenas. And if you arrive via the coast, Barcelona is only 3.5 hours away by motorway — tolls apply.
