Motorhome Rental in Rennes: Saint-Malo, Mont-Saint-Michel and the Gulf of Morbihan
Rennes Métropole's low-emission zone, real rental prices, and four getaways from Brittany's capital: Saint-Malo, Mont-Saint-Michel, the Gulf of Morbihan and the Brocéliande forest.
Rennes has earned its nickname as the gateway to Brittany: from the region’s capital, the sea is under an hour away in two different directions, Mont-Saint-Michel just over an hour, and the legendary Brocéliande forest a mere three-quarters of an hour. Well served by high-speed rail, the motorway and its airport, the city also has one of the best-stocked motorhome rental markets in western France.
Renting in Rennes
The rental market is dense on the peer-to-peer side — Yescapa and Goboony both list a wide choice of campervans and coachbuilts — as well as with professional operators, with fleet stations spread between downtown and the eastern ring road near Cesson-Sévigné. The smart move is to collect the vehicle on the outskirts: it saves you the drive through downtown and puts you straight onto the ring road, the starting point for every route to the coast. Low-emission zone: the Crit’Air sticker, even in Brittany
Rennes Métropole has run a low-emission zone since January 2025, covering Rennes and four neighbouring towns (Saint-Grégoire, Cesson-Sévigné, Chantepie, Noyal-Châtillon-sur-Seiche). A Crit’Air sticker is mandatory there; only unclassified and the oldest vehicles are excluded. Four getaways from Rennes
- Saint-Malo and the Emerald Coast (weekend): a little under an hour’s drive for the ramparts, the beaches and Dinard just across the water. The corsair city’s service area fills up by midday in summer — aim for an early arrival, or fall back on a quieter site around Cancale or Saint-Coulomb.

Why the sea, so close by, is more than scenery
It’s no accident that so many Rennes residents head for Saint-Malo or the gulf every weekend: the landmark review led by Mathew P. White and coauthors, published in 2020 in Environmental Research, found that living near the coast is associated with better self-reported general and mental health — partly through the outdoor activity it encourages, such as walking or swimming (Google Scholar page). From Rennes, that dose of “blue space” fits into a weekend, no time off needed.
Which vehicle for Brittany around Rennes?
The narrow streets of old Rennes and the small roads winding toward the Emerald Coast’s coves suit a compact campervan or a mini camper well, easy to park at coastal trailheads. Good to know
In summer, the road to Saint-Malo (the RN137) and the one to Mont-Saint-Michel get particularly busy on Saturdays between 10am and 1pm, when weekly rentals change over: leave early or shift by an hour or two.
