The North Coast 500 by campervan: the complete guide

The NC500 by campervan: an 830 km loop through northern Scotland, 7–10 days, single tracks, midges, campsites to book and the full budget from Edinburgh or Glasgow.

An 830 km loop from Inverness, beaches worthy of the tropics (just cooler), bare mountains and single-track roads: the North Coast 500 is arguably Europe's finest campervan itinerary. Here is the practical guide, postcard-free.

The right format: 7–10 days, compact van

The loop can be driven in five days flat, but that is driving it without seeing it. Allow 7–10 days to hike, swim (the brave) and sit out the squalls. Vehicle-wise, a van under 6 m is king: much of the west coast runs on single tracks with passing places, where an A-class demands real nerve. You drive on the left, wheel on the right — two roundabouts and it is second nature.

From Edinburgh or Glasgow: the actual plan

Most travellers rent in Edinburgh or Glasgow and drive up to Inverness (3–4 hours) — which allows a Cairngorms stop on the way out or Glencoe on the way back. Expect £85–140 per day for a summer campervan on Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer or Indie Campers; Van-Comparator shows the total price of all four in one search. Add fuel: the full loop from Edinburgh is about 1,500 km.

The rules of the game up there

The best season: May–June

Endless daylight, quiet roads, no midges: late May and June crush the competition. September is the second window. Before setting off, run through our departure checklist — on the NC500 you do not drive back for what you forgot. Compare available campervans in Scotland on Van-Comparator.
