Plitvice Lakes by Motorhome: the Practical Guide
Visit Plitvice Lakes by motorhome: access from Zagreb or Zadar, campsites around the park, entry prices, parking rules and a recommended itinerary.
Sixteen terraced lakes linked by waterfalls, wooden walkways skimming turquoise water: Plitvice is Croatia’s most visited natural site and one of the most beautiful in Europe. By motorhome, the park sits perfectly between Zagreb and the Dalmatian coast — provided you know the parking rules, which are strict around the park.
Getting there by motorhome
From Zagreb, allow 2 h via the A1 motorway (Karlovac exit) then the D1; from Zadar, 1.5 h. The road is wide and easy, even for a 7 m semi-integrated. Many travellers rent in Zagreb, where supply is broader and 10-20% cheaper than on the coast: expect 80-120 € per day for a campervan in shoulder season via Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer or Indie Campers, all compared by Van-Comparator in a single search.
Tickets, hours, crowds
Ticket prices vary sharply with the season: from about 10 € in winter to nearly 40 € per adult at the height of summer. Book your time slot online in July-August and enter before 9 am: the walkways fill quickly. Two entrances (ST1 and ST2) have large paid car parks that accept motorhomes, around 1.50 € per hour — but overnighting there is forbidden.
Where to sleep: campsites around the park
- Camp Korana, the park’s official campsite, 6 km from the northern entrance: vast, simple, shuttle available.
- Plitvice Holiday Resort in Grabovac: pool, shaded pitches, very family-friendly.
- Several small private campsites along the D1, 25-40 € per night for two with electricity.
Wild camping is illegal in Croatia and the park area is closely watched: stay on official grounds, fines exceed 300 €.
Recommended itinerary
The combination that works: two nights near the park to walk the upper and lower lakes over one full day, then a descent towards the coast via the Rastoke watermill village (30 min north) and Zadar. Plitvice thus slots neatly into a road trip that respects local rules between Zagreb and Dalmatia. Off season, the frozen park under snow is magnificent and open campsites can be counted on one hand: check before driving up.
