VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
The Romantic Rhine and Moselle Valley by Motorhome
Hilltop castles, the Lorelei rock, steep vineyards and nights at winegrowers’ stopovers: the Rhine-Moselle loop from Cologne, a classic of German vanlife.
Less than an hour south of Cologne begins one of Europe’s finest motorhome circuits: the UNESCO-listed Romantic Rhine valley, followed by the Moselle and its dizzyingly steep vineyards. A dense loop, dotted with winegrowers’ stopovers where the night is sometimes paid for in bottles.
The Romantic Rhine, Koblenz to Rüdesheim
Between Koblenz and Bingen the river cuts a 65 km gorge beneath some forty hilltop castles. The road hugs the bank, village after village: Boppard and its spectacular hairpin bend in the valley, St. Goar facing Rheinfels fortress, and of course the 132 m Lorelei rock. Marksburg, the only castle in the valley never destroyed, offers the most complete visit. Finish in Rüdesheim, with its vine-draped lanes and the Niederwald monument.
The Moselle, more intimate
Back at Koblenz, turn into the Moselle valley: narrower, twistier, more confidential. Cochem and its neo-Gothic castle, picture-postcard Beilstein, Bernkastel-Kues and its half-timbered square follow one another along the meanders. This is where the winegrowers’ stopovers shine: €10 to €15 a night amid the riesling rows, tasting included at many estates.
Trier, the Roman finale
The valley opens onto Trier, Germany’s oldest city: Porta Nigra, imperial baths and Constantine’s basilica, all UNESCO-listed. Allow half a day on foot — the Roman monuments are scattered across the whole centre.
Practical notes
Allow 4 to 6 days for the full loop (400 to 500 km). September-October, during the grape harvest, is the prime window — book the most popular stopovers. Riverside roads are narrow in places: a compact campervan parks far more easily in the wine villages than a large RV. A campervan rents for €75 to €150 a day in Cologne or Düsseldorf, a semi-integrated RV €95 to €180; how stopovers work is covered in our guide. Before booking, compare Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers on Van-Comparator: the Rhineland is one of Europe’s best-supplied rental regions — make the competition work for you.
