The Romantic Road by Motorhome: Würzburg to Füssen
460 km of medieval towns, vineyards and castles between Würzburg and the Alps: Germany’s most famous campervan itinerary, stage by stage.
The Romantische Straße links Würzburg to Füssen over roughly 460 km: Germany’s oldest and most famous scenic route, and a course tailor-made for motorhomes, with municipal stopovers at the gates of almost every old town. Practical starting points: Frankfurt, an hour from Würzburg, or Nuremberg, an hour from Rothenburg.
Würzburg and the Franconian vineyards
The UNESCO-listed Würzburg Residence opens the route in style. The Franconian slopes around the city produce dry whites sold in their distinctive round bottles — several estates welcome motorhomes for the night.
Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl, the Middle Ages intact
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the star of the road: complete ramparts, half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes. The municipal stopover is a ten-minute walk from the walls. Further south, Dinkelsbühl, spared by the wars, is often judged even more authentic — and far less crowded.
Nördlingen, Augsburg and the Wieskirche
Nördlingen sits inside a 25 km-wide meteorite crater, visible from the church tower. Augsburg, one of Germany’s oldest cities, holds the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest social housing complex (1521). One last marvel before the Alps: the Wieskirche, a UNESCO rococo church standing alone in the meadows.
Füssen and the Alpine finale
The road ends at Füssen, below Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles — the crescendo of the trip, timed tickets to be booked online.
Budget and planning
Allow 5 to 7 days to savour the route. A converted van rents for €85 to €160 a day, a campervan €75 to €150; municipal stopovers cost €10 to €15 a night — our stopover guide explains how they work.
