VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Alaska and Denali by RV from Anchorage
Renting an RV in Anchorage for Denali National Park: 240 miles up the Parks Highway, mandatory park buses, a mid-May-to-mid-September season, Kenai add-on and budget.
Alaska is the American state where the motorhome sells itself: hotels are scarce and expensive, distances are enormous, and the wilderness starts at the road's edge. Everything begins in Anchorage, the state's only real rental base — book early, as the local fleet is small and the season short. Van-Comparator compares the available offers, US platforms included as they join the comparator.
Anchorage → Denali: the Parks Highway
Denali National Park lies 240 miles north via the George Parks Highway — 4 h 30 with photo stops. Talkeetna, halfway up, deserves a break, with views of the 20,310-ft summit on a clear day. Inside the park the rules are unusual: private vehicles go no further than mile 15 of the Park Road; beyond that, the park buses (reservations strongly advised) carry you into grizzly, caribou and moose country.
Sleeping there
Riley Creek, at the park entrance, takes RVs up to 40 ft (around $30–35 a night, booked through the park concessionaire); Savage River, at mile 13, is wilder. Outside the park, Alaska is famously permissive: countless pullouts and state recreation sites allow overnighting, and boondocking is an institution. Bear-proof storage and the "nothing edible outside" rule are non-negotiable.
Extending: the Kenai Peninsula
With 12–14 days, add the south: Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park, Homer and its famous spit. The Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm ranks among the most beautiful drives in the country — with belugas and Dall sheep thrown in.
Season and budget
The season runs mid-May to mid-September; June brings 19 hours of daylight, late August the first auroras. Expect $250 to $400 per day for a Class C in July — Alaska is the most expensive RV market in the US — plus fuel 15 to 20% above the national average. Book 6 to 9 months out.
