VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Yellowstone by RV from Salt Lake City
Reaching Yellowstone and Grand Teton by RV from Salt Lake City: a 320-mile approach, campgrounds to book months out, a short season, wildlife rules and budget.
Salt Lake City is the best RV base for Yellowstone: a well-connected airport, cheaper rentals than California, and a 320-mile approach (5 hours) to the park's west entrance — versus 500 from Denver. Van-Comparator compares offers out of Salt Lake City, European and American platforms alike as they join the comparator.
The classic 8-day itinerary
Day 1: drive up to West Yellowstone through Idaho, overnight at a campground outside the park. Days 2–4: Yellowstone's southern loop — Old Faithful and the geyser basins, Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone Lake. Day 5: the northern loop — the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, then Lamar Valley for bison and wolves at first light. Days 6–7: Grand Teton, right on Yellowstone's southern boundary and often the trip's sleeper hit. Day 8: back to Salt Lake City via Jackson and Bear Lake.
Sleeping inside the park: plan far ahead or forget it
Yellowstone has a dozen campgrounds ($20 to $40 a night; more at Fishing Bridge, the only one with full hook-ups). Nearly all are booked through recreation.gov or Yellowstone National Park Lodges, and summer sells out months in advance. Fallbacks: the commercial campgrounds of West Yellowstone and Gardiner, or the neighboring national forests (Custer Gallatin), where dispersed overnighting in a self-contained vehicle is often free where permitted.
Season, altitude, wildlife
The season is short: most park roads open between late April and late May and close by early November. You'll be driving at 6,500 to 8,500 ft: cold nights year-round, heating essential, and an engine that drinks more. On wildlife, the rule is absolute: 100 yards from bears and wolves, 25 yards from bison — and never any food left outside; campsites come with bear-proof boxes.
Budget
Class C RV: $150 to $300 per day out of SLC, plus about 900 miles of driving (mileage and fuel, $400 to $600). Park entry is $35 per vehicle, or the $80 America the Beautiful pass. For the full method — insurance, deposit, one-way fees — see our guide to renting an RV in the USA.
