The Sierra Nevada by campervan from Granada: the Alhambra, mountains and the Alpujarras
The Alhambra, the Sierra Nevada road, the Berber villages of the Alpujarras and the tropical coast: a campervan route from Granada, with the classic ski-in-the-morning, swim-in-the-afternoon combo in winter.
Nowhere else in Europe does a single day let you ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon quite this easily. Granada, backed by the Sierra Nevada and under an hour from the Andalusian tropical coast, offers one of the continent’s most contrasting campervan routes — not to mention the Alhambra, sitting right in the middle of the city.
The route from Granada
From Granada, the A-395 climbs in about an hour to the Sierra Nevada ski resort, on one of the highest paved roads in Europe. Southwards, the A-44 reaches the tropical coast and Salobreña in forty-five minutes. Between the two, the Alpujarras road winds up from Lanjarón towards the white villages clinging to the massif’s southern slope. Allow 4 to 6 days to combine all three without rushing.
The Alhambra: book before you leave
The monument sells out weeks in advance, even outside the classic tourist season — it’s one of Spain’s most visited sites, with a strictly limited number of daily tickets to protect the Generalife and the Nasrid palaces. Book online as soon as your travel dates are set, whatever the time of year.
The Sierra Nevada road
The climb to the resort tops out above 2,500 metres, giving a view over the entire Vega de Granada on a clear day. The national park strictly regulates overnight vehicle parking past a certain point — stop at the aires and campsites dotted along the way up, not at the summit.
The Alpujarras, Berber villages
Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira, the three most photographed villages on this slope, are reached in an hour and a quarter of tight bends from Granada. Their whitewashed terraced architecture, a legacy of Moorish and Berber settlement, stands in sharp contrast to the rest of Andalusia — a detour worth an overnight stay rather than a rushed there-and-back.
The winter split
From December to April, the Sierra Nevada lets you ski in the morning before dropping down to the tropical coast in the afternoon, where temperatures stay mild year-round thanks to a microclimate that shields Almuñécar and Salobreña from frost. In summer it’s the reverse: the city bakes above 35°C while the Alpujarras offer welcome mountain coolness. That contrast still holds for now, but a study by Jose-David Hidalgo-Hidalgo, David Pulido-Velazquez and Antonio-Juan Collados-Lara, published in 2026 in Climatic Change (DOI 10.1007/s10584-026-04175-8), documents a clear decline in snow cover across the Spanish Sierra Nevada between 1951 and 2021 — one more reason to favour winter and spring rather than count on late-season snow.
The real budget
