The Tatras by Campervan: Zakopane and the Slovak Side

A Tatras campervan road trip: Zakopane on the Polish side, Štrbské Pleso on the Slovak side, the Slovak vignette, mountain campsites and national park rules.

The Tatras are the only alpine-style mountains between the Alps and the Caucasus: 2,655 m at Gerlach, glacial lakes, chamois — all packed into a compact 60 km massif straddling Poland and Slovakia. By campervan you can sleep at the foot of both sides in the same week and chain together Central Europe’s finest hikes.

The itinerary over 7 days

Only about 400 km: here you drive little and walk a lot.

Vignette and formalities

On the Polish side, no vignette for vehicles under 3.5 t. On the Slovak side, the electronic vignette is mandatory on motorways: about 12 € for 10 days, bought online against your plate. Between the two countries, no formalities — same Schengen area, only the currency changes (złoty in Poland, euro in Slovakia). Road-by-road costs are covered in our fuel and tolls guide.

Sleeping at the foot of the peaks

Both national parks (TPN and TANAP) strictly forbid wild camping and overnight vehicle stays on their car parks. Established options abound: Camping Pod Krokwią in Zakopane, grounds around Poprad and Starý Smokovec on the Slovak side, 20-35 € per night for two. Book for July-August: the Tatras are the number-one mountain destination in both countries.

Renting and budgeting

The smart move: rent in Krakow, 2 h from Zakopane, where a campervan costs 70-105 € per day in shoulder season — Van-Comparator compares Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers in one search. A full week for two: 950-1,300 € excluding meals. Best windows: mid-June for crocuses and long days, September for golden larches and trails returned to silence.
