VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
Tuscany by motorhome: Chianti and the Val d'Orcia from Florence
A one-week motorhome itinerary from Florence: Chianti, Siena, the Val d'Orcia, agricamping stays, ZTL zones and a detailed budget.
Rolling hills, cypress lanes, a hilltop village every 15 km: Tuscany is a perfect motorhome itinerary, provided you accept one simple rule — you never sleep in the old towns, you sleep in the vineyards. The ideal start is Florence, home to the region's widest rental supply.
Days 1–2: Chianti
Leave Florence on the SR222, the "Chiantigiana": Greve, Panzano, Castellina. Tuscany's great vanlife speciality is agricamping: wine estates that host 5 to 15 vehicles for €15–30 a night, tasting included. Book ahead in summer — the best ones fill up.
Days 3–4: Siena and the crete senesi
An official stopover sits at the foot of Siena (shuttle to the centre), then the lunar landscapes of the crete towards Asciano. Siena, like Florence, runs a strict ZTL: never drive near the centre — cameras issue automatic fines of around €80 per pass.
Days 5–7: the Val d'Orcia
Pienza, Montepulciano, Bagno Vignoni and its thermal pools, San Quirico: postcard country. The white gravel roads (strade bianche) are legal but dusty — check that your rental contract doesn't exclude them; some Yescapa and Goboony owners do, and a cleaning fee for a chalk-white van is a poor way to end the trip.
Budget for 7 days, 2 people
- Semi-integrated RV or converted van: €95–160/day in high season, so €700–1,100 for the week.
- Nights (agricamping + stopovers): €130–180.
- Fuel: a 450 km loop, roughly €80.
Off season, Tuscany stays superb from October to April and prices drop 30–40%: see our off-season rental guide. To find the right vehicle at the best price in Florence, one Van-Comparator search covers all four major platforms at once. One last tip: collect the vehicle on a Saturday morning rather than a Friday evening — the handover is calmer and getting out of Florence far smoother, especially in a wider RV.
