Tyrol by campervan from Innsbruck: Zillertal, Ötztal and the Timmelsjoch
A campervan road trip from Innsbruck: the Zillertal and Ötztal valleys, the Timmelsjoch scenic road, Tyrolean campsites and a weekly budget.
Capital of the Austrian Alps, Innsbruck is ringed by valleys that each amount to a road trip: the Zillertal and its waterfalls, the Ötztal and its glaciers, the Stubaital twenty minutes from the centre. One week in a campervan delivers a concentrated dose of Tyrol.
The Zillertal: the classic valley
Forty minutes east, the valley runs up to Mayrhofen and then the Zillertaler Höhenstrasse, a balcony scenic road (toll about €10, steep gradients: not advised for A-class motorhomes over 7 m). At the valley head, the Schlegeis reservoir and its trails. Campsites are numerous and excellent — Tyrol is among the best-equipped regions in Europe; expect €35–50 a night for two in high season.
The Ötztal and the Timmelsjoch
Second axis: the Ötztal, 65 km of valley up to Obergurgl. The highlight: the Timmelsjoch road (2,474 m), tipping over into Italy towards Merano — toll around €20 for a motorhome, open June to October, with strikingly designed museum stations at the top. Loop back to Innsbruck via the Brenner Pass.
Austrian rules to know
- The motorway vignette is mandatory (a 10-day version exists, around ten euros for ≤ 3.5 t); valley roads don't require it.
- Wild camping is banned in Tyrol — regional law is explicit. Stopovers and campsites only; book ahead in July–August.
- In winter, snow tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 15 April: check your rental's equipment.
One-week budget
Campervan in Innsbruck: €85–140/day in summer on Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers — Austrian supply is thinner than in neighbouring Bavaria, so also compare Munich departures, 1 h 45 away. Add €130–200 of fuel and tolls for 700 km, and €200–300 of overnight fees. To prepare for hairpin driving, reread our Alps road trip guide. And pack layers whatever the month: a 30°C afternoon in Innsbruck can turn into an 8°C evening at 2,000 m.
