RV rental: avoiding scams and nasty surprises
Fake listings, off-platform payments, abusive deposits, surprise fees: the warning signs and the reflexes that protect your motorhome rental.
Motorhome rental is a healthy market, but scams there follow the same recipes as everywhere: a deal too good to be true, a rushed payment, a vehicle you never actually see. Here are the signals that should make you walk away — and the reflexes that protect you.
The too-good listing
A recent California at €45/day in August — 40% below market — does not exist. Fake listings recycle stolen photos and tell a nice story (relocation abroad, urgent sale). Reflexes: reverse-image-search the photos, and treat any “owner” who wants to move the conversation to e-mail or WhatsApp as radioactive.
The golden rule: everything on the platform
Never a bank transfer, never an off-platform deposit. Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers hold the payment in escrow and include insurance: that is precisely what you are buying by going through them. A direct payment “to avoid the fees” strips you of insurance, roadside assistance and any recourse — our platform comparison explains what each one guarantees.
The condition report, your best defence
The most common dispute is not fraud but a questionable deposit deduction. The simple counter: time-stamped photos and videos at departure AND return — bodywork, wheels, windscreen, interior, gauge levels. Insist that every existing scratch appears on the contract. Our deposit and insurance guide details the dispute procedure.
The surprise fees (legal, but worth hunting down)
Re-read three lines before signing: mileage (beyond the allowance, €0.25–0.45/km), cleaning (up to €100 if the vehicle comes back dirty), gas and cassette (full bottle and emptied cassette, or steep flat fees). Return it full, clean and drained: zero surprises.
The Van-Comparator safety net
We only compare established platforms with escrowed payments and included insurance. The best price, yes — but never off the secured path.
