The Blue Ridge Parkway by RV from Atlanta: mountains and the Smokies
From Atlanta, the Blue Ridge Parkway by motorhome: 469 miles of ridgeline, Great Smoky Mountains, tunnel clearances to check, campgrounds and fall colour.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is America’s most visited scenic road: 469 miles of ridgeline between Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Virginia, with no traffic lights, no trucks and a 45 mph limit. From Atlanta, the mountains are two hours away — the ideal combination for a first American RV trip.
The 7-10 day itinerary
- Atlanta → Great Smoky Mountains (170 miles): the country’s most visited national park, free to enter, blue haze and black bears; Elkmont and Smokemont campgrounds book on Recreation.gov.
- Cherokee → Asheville: the Parkway’s first 80 miles are its highest (over 6,000 ft at Richland Balsam); Asheville deserves two nights for its breweries and the Biltmore.
- Asheville → Blowing Rock: Mount Mitchell (the highest peak in the eastern US at 6,684 ft), Linville Falls, the Linn Cove Viaduct; Julian Price and Linville Falls campgrounds sit right on the road.
- Virginia option: continue to Roanoke and Shenandoah with an extra week.
The crucial detail: the tunnels
The Parkway has 26 tunnels, all in its southern half, and some clear less than 11 ft 6 in at the edges of the arch: check your vehicle’s exact height (roof air-conditioner included) before booking, and consult the National Park Service’s official clearance list. A campervan or semi-integrated fits everywhere; a tall Class C may need to bypass a few sections. Another reality: there are no gas stations on the Parkway itself — fill up before you climb.
Season and budget
The big moment is October: fall colour sets the ridges alight and weekends sell out — book vehicle and campgrounds by summer. Spring (rhododendrons in June) is gorgeous and quieter. Sections close in winter for ice. Budget: campervan $110-190/day in Atlanta, Class C $140-250/day, park campgrounds $20-30/night.
Book at the best price
Van-Comparator compares Yescapa, Goboony, Roadsurfer and Indie Campers, with Outdoorsy and RVshare on the way — Atlanta is one of the cheapest markets in the Southeast. Before you go, reread driving a motorhome for the first time: the winding Parkway is best savoured at 40 mph.
