Hiring a campervan in the Algarve: cliffs, mild winters and the new rules

The Algarve by van from Faro: the cliff coast, the wild west coast, Portugal’s overnight parking law, and the real budget by season.

The Algarve has become one of Europe's great van destinations: 300 days of sunshine, ochre cliffs, winters at 17 °C — and, since 2021, clear rules you need to know before setting off. Here is the complete guide from Faro.

Portugal's golden rule

Since 2021, Portugal bans overnighting in a motorhome outside authorised places: campsites, official service areas (the "ASA" network) and registered private grounds. Fines are real and checks frequent along the coast. The good news: the aire network has grown at speed — expect 10-15 € a night with services, often minutes from the beaches. The full framework is in our wild camping in Europe guide.

Two Algarves in one trip

The one-week route writes itself: Faro, Lagos, Sagres, up the west coast, back through the interior (Monchique and its eucalyptus forests).

Calendar and budget

From October to May, the Algarve is the definitive van destination: 16-22 °C, available aires, vans at 65-95 € per day. In summer, expect 100-150 € per day and book aires and campsites ahead. Book the vehicle itself two to three months out for February half-term and Easter, the two mini peaks of the mild season. One-week budget for two in the shoulder season: 850-1,300 € all in — rental, fuel (the Algarve covers about 400 km), overnights and grilled-fish markets included.

Faro has a very well-served airport and a dense rental offer: Van-Comparator compares Yescapa, Indie Campers and the listed local operators there — with Outdoorsy and McRent coming to the comparison soon. One search, the real total price, and the cliffs to yourself.
