Campervan Hire in Marseille: Calanques, Côte Bleue and the Provençal Hinterland

A national park on the doorstep of France’s second city: Marseille is a unique Mediterranean campervan base. The calanques to the south-east, the Côte Bleue to the west, and the whole Provençal hinterland — Luberon, Alpilles, Camargue — within an hour’s drive.
Renting in Marseille

Collect the vehicle on the outskirts rather than downtown: Marseille traffic does not forgive hesitant dimensions. Expect €75 to €150 per day for a campervan (price guide). Calanques: book before you pack the swimsuit
The Calanques national park, Europe’s first peri-urban national park, is a victim of its own success: to protect the soil from erosion, the Sugiton calanque requires a free mandatory summer reservation with a daily visitor cap. The rationale is scientific: David N. Cole’s review of hiking and camping impacts, the reference in the field, shows that trampling degrades soils and vegetation far faster than they regenerate — especially in dry Mediterranean environments (Google Scholar page). Book online a few days ahead, and aim for the western calanques (Sormiou, Morgiou), outside the cap, early or late in the day.
Four itineraries from Marseille

Good to know
Two golden local rules: never leave anything visible in the cab, even for ten minutes — vehicle break-ins are the real Marseille risk — and watch the mistral, which can ground a campervan for a whole day (our guide to driving in strong wind explains the thresholds).
