The Médoc by campervan: vineyards, estuary and ocean

The château route, estuary villages, endless Atlantic beaches from Lacanau to Soulac: the Médoc peninsula is a complete road trip less than an hour from Bordeaux.

An 80 km peninsula with the world’s most famous vineyards on one side, the ocean and its infinite beaches on the other, and almost nobody in between. The Médoc is the most underrated road trip in south-west France — and one of the easiest from Bordeaux.

Vineyard side: the château route

The D2 road rolls out the legendary names: Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe. Many estates welcome visitors by reservation (€15-40 with tasting), and the France Passion network lets you spend the night at member winegrowers’ properties — free, in exchange for simple courtesy and, usually, a few bottles bought with genuine pleasure. It is one of the finest van experiences France has to offer.

Ocean side: Lacanau to the Pointe de Grave

Lacanau and its surf breaks, the lakes of Hourtin and Carcans (France’s largest natural freshwater lakes, ideal with children), Montalivet, then Soulac and its 1900s villas. The coastal towns play fair: plenty of service stopovers, typically €8-14 a night, a few hundred metres from the beaches. In July-August, arrive before 5 pm.

The smart loop

Drive up through the vines, come back along the ocean (or the reverse), and at the Pointe de Grave the Le Verdon-Royan ferry (about €45 for a van, 20 minutes across the estuary) opens the road onwards into Charente-Maritime — the classic link in an Atlantic coast road trip.
