Atlantic coast campervan road trip: La Rochelle to Biarritz
La Rochelle, Bordeaux, the Dune du Pilat, the Landes, Biarritz: the classic Atlantic coast campervan itinerary — best season, budget, and the complete guide.
The French Atlantic coast is one of the few places in Europe where a single campervan week strings together islands, vineyards, Europe's tallest sand dune and world-class surf spots without ever driving more than two hours. The classic starting point: La Rochelle — or Nantes if you want to begin with the Vendée.
The itinerary everyone agrees on
Head south to Royan and the Gironde estuary (ferry to Le Verdon, gateway to the Médoc and its châteaux), then Bordeaux, the Dune du Pilat and the Arcachon basin, the long straight line of the Landes — Mimizan, Contis, bike paths under the pines — and the Basque finale: Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the corniche road. A full week, with no stage over 150 km — which leaves real time for beaches, markets and wine cellars.
When to go
May–June and September are perfect: friendly ocean, empty bike paths, relaxed stopovers. July–August still works, but the coast locks down: many seaside towns ban overnight motorhome parking near the beach, and coastal stopovers fill by late afternoon — arrive early or sleep a few kilometers inland. The ocean stays surfable all season long, and September adds warm water to empty line-ups.
The budget
Budget €75–150 per day for a campervan depending on the season, €85–160 for a converted van with a shower — much appreciated after a surf session. For overnights, alternate municipal stopovers (€5–10) with pine-shaded campsites when you need laundry. Platform price gaps are real on this in-demand route: the same model out of Bordeaux sometimes shows a 15% spread — compare before you book.
The tip that changes everything
Bring bikes: the Vélodyssée cycle route runs the entire coast, and the campervan-plus-bike combo solves the summer parking problem. A bike rack is a filterable extra on Van-Comparator — and it's often included with peer-to-peer rentals.
