VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
The 10 most scenic motorhome stopovers and stages in Europe
Fjords, alpine passes, Atlantic cliffs: ten stages where sleeping in a motorhome comes with Europe’s finest view — and how to actually get the spot.
Some stopovers justify the whole trip on their own: you cut the engine, open the door and the landscape does the rest. Here are ten regions of Europe where the view from the van is at its most spectacular — with the legal way to enjoy it.
The top 10, north to south
- The Lofoten and the fjord coast, Norway: the world summit of the scenic stopover. Aires and campsites facing the rock walls — details in our fjord route guide.
- Iceland's south coast: waterfalls and glaciers from the mandatory campsites — wild camping is banned there, but the campsites are spectacular in their own right.
- The North Coast 500, Scotland: lochs and moorland from Edinburgh or Inverness.
- The Dolomites, Italy: passes and alpine meadows around Cortina — arrive before 4 pm in summer.
- The great Swiss and Austrian passes: Grimsel, Furka, Grossglockner (a toll road, open May to October).
- Lake Annecy and the Aravis: France's most accessible alpine panorama.
- The Douro valley, Portugal: terraced vineyards out of Porto.
- The Picos de Europa, Spain: real mountains 20 km from the Atlantic.
- The Algarve's west coast: wild cliffs near Sagres — authorised aires and campsites only, Portuguese law is strict.
- The Black Forest, Germany: the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse and its viewpoints, kingdom of the 10-15 € Stellplatz.
How to get THE spot
Three rules hold everywhere: arrive between 3 and 5 pm (scenic aires fill before dinner), aim for May-June or September (same views, half the crowd), and book where booking exists — view campsites in Norway and the Dolomites sell out weeks ahead in summer. Our stopovers guide explains the apps that list them all.
Van-Comparator compares rentals from 107 cities across Europe and North America: the view comes included in the price.
