Renting a campervan in Norway: the fjord route — itinerary, prices, tips

Bergen, the Sognefjord, Geiranger, Trollstigen: how to plan one to two weeks of campervanning on the fjord route, what it costs, and the traps to avoid.

Norway has become the campervan destination in Europe: designated scenic routes, ferries that are part of the journey, the right to sleep out in vast nature, and summer daylight that never really ends. Here's how to do it right.

The classic itinerary from Bergen (7 days)

Bergen → Hardangerfjord → Sognefjord (Flåm and the Stegastein viewpoint) → Geiranger → Trollstigen → Ålesund. Stages of 2 to 4 hours of driving, a different fjord every evening, and the Trollstigen hairpins as the grand finale. For the ambitious: continue north to the Atlantic Ocean Road, but allow ten days — or start from Oslo and loop via Lillehammer.

The real prices

A campervan runs €100–160 per day in July–August out of Bergen or Oslo, 30 to 40% less in June and September. Add the ferries (€10–40 per crossing, unavoidable), urban tolls and tunnels (billed automatically by plate, €5–15 per driving day) and a high cost of living: stock up on groceries before the tourist hotspots. Plan for 150–250 km of combined driving and ferries per day if you want to enjoy the viewpoints rather than sprint between them.

A short season: book early

The real window runs June to August; Norwegian fleets are small and July vehicles sell out by February. Search early, and check pickups in neighboring Sweden if your search returns few results. The connoisseur's pick: early June, which combines open passes, waterfalls at full snowmelt and prices 30% below July.

The traps to avoid

Underestimating driving times (realistic average: 50 km/h between ferries and hairpins), and believing wild camping is an absolute right — the allemansretten allows nights out in nature, but not anywhere with a vehicle: stick to tolerated spots, 150 meters from dwellings, two nights maximum (our wild camping in Europe guide covers it all). Finally, check the mileage package: on this route, 250 km per day disappears fast.
