It gets forgotten behind the museums and the nightlife: Berlin is a capital set amid water and forest. Surrounding Brandenburg counts some 3,000 lakes, the Spreewald and its canals are an hour away, and the Baltic’s chalk cliffs three and a half hours — an immense playground the moment you clear the ring road.
Renting in Berlin
As befits a capital, the offer is among the widest in Germany: professional operators around the ring, private campervans via Goboony and Yescapa across the city. Expect €75 to €150 per day for a campervan (price guide) — and collect the vehicle on the outskirts rather than the centre: simpler traffic, calmer handover.

Three itineraries from Berlin

A capital studied for its need of green
Berliners’ appetite for their lakes even has a scientific explanation: the study by Nadja Kabisch and Dagmar Haase published in 2014 in Landscape and Urban Planning mapped Berlin’s green-space provision and showed that, despite a generous overall endowment, access remains uneven across districts and populations (Google Scholar page). The campervan settles the question its own way: when the neighbourhood park saturates on a July Saturday, a quiet lake is never more than 45 minutes off.
Good to know
Discreet overnight parking to recover from the drive is tolerated here and there in Germany, but the shores of Brandenburg’s most popular lakes are patrolled in summer: aim for the official Stellplätze, plentiful and cheap. To push south, Dresden and Saxon Switzerland are two hours away — with a possible stop in Leipzig.
