Bavaria’s second city, Nuremberg has stayed in Munich’s shadow for motorhome hire — wrongly. Its rebuilt medieval centre, crowned by the Kaiserburg, is a stop in itself; above all, the city sits in the middle of concentrated Franconia: vineyards, hilltop fortresses, limestone canyons and one of the highest densities of breweries in the world.

Franconian Switzerland, the playground next door
Between Nuremberg, Bamberg and Bayreuth, Franconian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz) lines up limestone valleys, perched castles, caves and half-timbered villages — and dozens of family breweries where beer is drunk in the shade of lime trees. It is one of Germany’s best motorhome territories: short distances, plenty of Stellplätze, gorgeous back roads. Push on to Bamberg, whose entire old town is a World Heritage site.
