The Loire’s first great bend an hour from Paris, Orléans is the natural gateway to the Loire Valley — and often a cheaper, easier starting base than the capital. Chambord is 45 minutes away, the Sologne begins at the end of the avenue, and the UNESCO-listed stretch of the valley starts at Sully-sur-Loire, just upstream.

Three itineraries from Orléans

The river by bike, a measured phenomenon
Orléans is a major stage of the Loire à Vélo, the French link of EuroVelo 6: the visitor study run in 2022 by the Centre-Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire regions counted about 1.8 million cyclists on the route that year. The phenomenon reaches beyond France: the study by Richard Weston and colleagues on the EuroVelo network, produced for the European Parliament, documents the economic and sustainable potential of these continental cycle routes (Google Scholar page). By campervan the combination is unbeatable: overnight in the van, days cycling along the river — think about the bike rack when you book.
Good to know
The Loire banks are generous with stopovers, but the river stays wild: parking areas on the flood plain can be evacuated during high water, so respect the signs. And if your route runs west, Tours and the estuary follow naturally — the Loire Valley is best travelled with the current, château after château.
