Few rental cities offer such a start: in Innsbruck you leave the depot car park and ten minutes later you are already climbing an alpine valley. The Tyrolean capital, wedged between the Karwendel range and the Patscherkofel summits, is the most central base in the eastern Alps — Zillertal, Stubai, Ötztal, Brenner: everything radiates from here.

The valleys, then the great passes

These valleys are among the most studied in Europe for tourist traffic: the study by Anna Scuttari, Maria Della Lucia and Umberto Martini published in 2013 in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, based on a fine-grained traffic analysis in neighbouring South Tyrol, shows how integrated tourism-mobility planning can ease leisure-traffic pressure on alpine valleys (Google Scholar page). In practice for you: avoid Saturday transit days in summer, and favour valley-floor Stellplätze over resort car parks.
Good to know
Free overnight parking is tightly restricted in Tyrol: use the many valley campsites and Stellplätze instead. If your loop continues north, Munich is only two hours up the motorway — no German vignette needed; there isn’t one.
