What to know before driving in Switzerland
Two simple rules: motorways require the annual vignette (CHF 40) for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes — check it comes with the rental, which is almost always the case for a Swiss-registered van; above 3.5 tonnes, a specific heavy-vehicle charge applies instead. And in town or on the Riviera, aim for park-and-ride lots: the centres of Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux do not take kindly to large vehicles. Lavaux: Europe’s most beautiful terraced vineyard?
Between Lausanne and Vevey, the Lavaux terraces — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007 — plunge into the lake for a dozen kilometres. The narrow Corniche road is best savoured early in the morning; better still, park the vehicle and walk the vineyard trail between Saint-Saphorin and Rivaz, tasting cellars included (in moderation for the driver — the Swiss limit is 0.05% and checks are frequent).
Lake Geneva, a giant under scientific watch
Lake Geneva is Western Europe’s largest lake — 580 km² and 309 metres deep — and one of the most studied in the world. Long-term measurements by limnologists show that warming is reaching even its deepest layers: the study by Ulrich Lemmin published in 2020 in Limnology and Oceanography (Google Scholar page), based on decades of temperature and oxygen records, documents the dynamics of the lake bottom and the years without complete winter mixing — a direct issue for deep-water oxygenation. From the shore, none of this changes the swimming: the public beaches of Vidy, Lutry and Villeneuve remain among the most pleasant in the Alps.

The Riviera (1–2 days): Vevey, Montreux and Chillon Castle, then the heights of Caux for the view.
