Italy’s economic capital, served by three airports (Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo), Milan is the biggest motorhome rental hub in the north of the country. Its real strength is not the city itself — best visited before picking up the vehicle — but its position: every great alpine lake lies within two hours.
Renting in Milan (and avoiding Area C)
Operators cluster around the airports and the outer ring — just as well: the historic centre enforces Area C, a congestion charge with restrictions on top, and the wider city Area B, a vast low-emission zone. The lakes, obviously

The Expo effect, ten years on
Milan was not always a tourist destination — it was the 2015 World Expo that durably changed its image. The study by Sonia Ferrari and Chito Guala published in Leisure Studies compares precisely the legacy of mega-events on the image and tourism of Genoa, Turin and Milan, documenting that post-Expo shift (Google Scholar page). For the campervan traveller the consequence is concrete: a supply of aires and peri-urban campsites that has grown with demand.
Good to know
Milan is also an excellent launchpad to the south-west: the vineyards of the Langhe and Piedmont two hours away, and the Cinque Terre three — in both cases you park the van back from the coast and continue on foot or by train; that is the Ligurian rule of the game.
