The playground: compact nature and cycling cities
- The Veluwe: the country's largest forest massif, heather moors and the Hoge Veluwe national park (the Kröller-Müller museum and its Van Goghs). 45 minutes away.
- The Utrechtse Heuvelrug: wooded hills, castles, cycle paths — a national park on the city's doorstep.
- The IJsselmeer and the northern villages: dykes, historic towns, Dutch light.
- Zeeland to the south-west for the beaches, 90 minutes away.
The Dutch rule: minicampings and a dense network
Wild camping is banned in the Netherlands, but the country compensates with density: hundreds of campsites and above all farm minicampings (€20–35 a night), often delightful and never far. Booking is only needed in July–August and on spring weekends. Bring bikes — most listings include a rack — and the whole country opens up from any campsite.
