VAN-COMPARATOR Guide
The Portuguese Atlantic coast by campervan: Lisbon to Porto
The Lisbon-Porto coastal van route: Sintra, Peniche, Nazaré, Aveiro — 450 km of wild shoreline, the aires where overnighting is legal, and the one-week budget.
Between Lisbon and Porto, 450 km of Atlantic coast line up cliffs, fishing villages, giant waves and cities of art. It is the definitive Portuguese road trip — a perfect week in either direction, with one-way rental possible between the two cities with several operators (drop-off fee: typically 100-200 €).
The one-week route, south to north
- Days 1-2 — Lisbon and Sintra: vehicle pickup, the palaces of Sintra (leave the van at the park-and-ride, shuttles are frequent), then Cabo da Roca — the westernmost point of the continent.
- Day 3 — Ericeira and Peniche: a World Surfing Reserve, the ramparts of Peniche, sunset over the Berlengas islands offshore.
- Day 4 — Nazaré and Óbidos: the Nazaré lighthouse overlooks the giant winter waves; Óbidos, a walled medieval village, is 30 minutes away.
- Day 5 — Figueira da Foz and the pine forest: the coast turns wild, with municipal aires dotted along the road.
- Days 6-7 — Aveiro then Porto: the canals of Aveiro, the striped houses of Costa Nova beach, and the arrival above the Douro.
Where to sleep: the Portuguese rule
Essential reminder: since 2021, overnighting in a van outside authorised places is banned in Portugal. The west coast is well served by official aires and municipal campsites (8-18 € a night) — a real but light constraint, detailed in our wild camping in Europe guide. Book summer weekends, improvise the rest of the year.
Season and budget
The Portuguese Atlantic coast stays cool and breezy even in summer (22-26 °C, ocean at 17-19 °C): May-June and September-October are perfect, and winter stays mild but wet. One-week budget for two: 850-1,300 € — van at 70-120 € per day by season, moderate fuel, motorway tolls avoidable via the N1 and the coastal roads.
